Long-time GHS softball coach retires
When it comes to coaching high school softball, Spike Harrison is just about the best of the best. Over his 26-year career coaching the Glenvar High School softball team, Harrison never had a losing season and his team made the regional playoffs every year.
This year, Harrison will hang up the roster and retire as the coach with the most total wins in Glenvar H.S. history. He was named the 2007 Softball Group A Coach of the Year.
From the time Harrison became the softball head coach in 1983 (he took two years off in 1999 and 2000), the team recorded 482 victories, more than 450 of which were under Harrison’s leadership.
“Probably my proudest moment was winning the 1997 state championship,” says Harrison. “The game lasted 16 innings and we were able to come out on top at the end. I’m also proud of all the players. Every year they consistently performed like champions.” he said.
“Spike is a legend here at Glenvar,” said GHS Principal Joe Hafey. “He was a teacher here until 2006 and arguably is the winningest coach in Glenvar High School history. We all are sad to see Spike leave the field, but we wish him all the best and thank him for his dedication to Glenvar and to his players,” Hafey added.
