Education Foundation awards more than $60,000 in scholarships
The Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation held their annual scholarship awards presentation May 9 at Northside Middle School. In all, the Foundation awarded 84 scholarships totaling $60,000. In addition, a special $1000 scholarship was awarded to a student in honor of Dr. Lorraine Lange, who recently was named the 2011 Superintendent of the Year by VASS.
“The students receiving these scholarships are outstanding young men and women who are the best of the best in Roanoke County Public Schools,” said Foundation chairman Lenora Downing. “The scholarship selection committee had a very difficult time selecting the winners from many outstanding applications,” Downing added.
“We would not be able to award these scholarships without the generous donations of our sponsors and individual donors,” said Downing. “We very much appreciate all their support,” Downing added.
Since its inception in 1991 the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships to students and classroom teachers. Much of the funding for these scholarships comes from individual and corporate donations.
